AMENDMENT COALITION OF MISSOURI
August 6, 2003
Letter to the Editor St. Louis Post-Dispatch (stltoday.com)
The Aug. 1 editorial
says that the right to carry guns won't necessarily protect people and calls
for more laws to curtail their proliferation. The editorial also noted that
the City Hall had metal detectors with armed guards, which didn't deter the
murderer or protect the victim, but then calls for more rules to beef up the
effectiveness of the metal detectors.
What is really shown by this awful incident is that all those gun control laws in New York City didn't stop the murderer any better than the millions of dollars of hardware and uniformed personnel. The fact is that the murdered councilman tried to take personal responsibility for his own safety by carrying a weapon. He had reserved the option of fighting back. It didn't work this time, but it does many other times. In unknowingly inviting his own murderer around the outside of the metal detector, he was held accountable for that mistake. Ultimately, we are each responsible for our own safety. The murder of Davis should remind Congress that the dangerous experiment with thousands of gun laws is a failure. Against determined, motivated criminals, gun control in all its forms usually only serves to provide helpless victims. The impediments to gun ownership by honest citizens should be removed and honest adults should be allowed to decide for themselves whether to prepare to fight or to just stand there and take what comes. The less government involvement with gun rights, the better
