AMENDMENT COALITION OF MISSOURI From The West County Journals westnews@yourjournal.com June 11, 2003
Concealed Weapons Dear
Editor: Gov.
Holden’s office responded to the question, “Will he veto the concealed
weapons bill now before him” with, “The people have spoken.”
This response was referring to the failed 1999 referendum.
It’s his justification to veto it. Prior to
1999 no License To Carry bill made it through the Senate.
In 1999 the subject passed the Senate only after many debilitating
requirements and a referendum were included.
That referendum lost in 1999. In the four years since then, many citizens
and candidates for office studied the issue.
Then there were several elections. Concealed
weapons by permit was a major issue in many races and was often the deciding
factor. Candidates who favored a
permit system for concealed carry became more abundant in the General Assembly
after each election and License To Carry a more welcomed subject. This year,
License To Carry passed the Senate by a vote of 23 to 7 and the House by 111 to
41! The People elected these
legislators. The representatives of
The People have spoken. They want a
concealed weapons system to be available for qualified adults. Indeed,
the Governor is right. The people have spoken.
But is Governor Holden listening or is he only hearing what he wants to
hear? The Governor should allow
this bill to become law or the people will likely continue to speak until it
does. Yours truly,
Dale A. Schmid, President, Missouri Capitol Building, Room 216 Telephone: (573) 751-3222
