SECOND

AMENDMENT

COALITION

OF MISSOURI

From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch "Letters to the Editor"

April 28, 2003

Lock and load

I believe in evidence. The debate over a licensing system for adults to get permits to carry concealed weapons has been going on for 13 years in Missouri. Evidence for passing a "license to carry" is that every state in America except Missouri and five others has some form of license to carry. New Mexico and Colorado passed theirs only weeks ago. No evidence has been shown that any state has ever repealed or tightened their law. No evidence has been shown that these states regret having the law.

Against this evidence are clever cartoons, predictions of death and destruction, and statistics from dubious sources. In the absence of evidence that a license to carry is wrong for Missouri, and in light of a lifetime of evidence from other states that it does no harm and occasionally does some good, the Legislature should pass the bill to create a license-to-carry permit system.
