SECOND
AMENDMENT
COALITION
OF
MISSOURI
SHAME
ON ST. LOUIS COUNTY
March 8th, 2005
To the St. Louis County Council and its members:
Later this week in Jefferson City, various organizations and individuals who support the right of self-defense will be rallying in the Capital Rotunda to celebrate the first anniversary of the implementation of License-To-Carry (LTC) concealed weapons in Missouri, making us the 46th state to do so. I am writing to you to express my displeasure and disappointment in both the St. Louis County Council and each member as an individual, on this subject. St. Louis County is the only one of 114 Missouri counties that is not accepting applications for LTC permits. Your bias against this subject is obvious and disturbing. It is even more so since the evidence is in that you are wrong in this bias.
More importantly, the council and its members have, at the very minimum, acquiesced on this subject and allowed the St. Louis County Police Department to take a very anti freedom, anti self-defense position. As leaders of the community, you have sat in silence as the false argument raged that LTC would result in violence, death, destruction and would be a threat to police officers even though there was evidence in abundance that such would not be the case. Members of the community looked to you for the truth and leadership and you allowed them to be misled. With the passage of this year, the truth is there for all to see: Cops have not died like flies and the streets have not run red with blood. Some citizens have indeed protected themselves with their concealed firearm. Still you are silent! The council has the power of the purse, of the budget and the power to legislate and yet you do nothing. Both as a group and as individuals you are disappointments and act as if pawns for the paid staff. You have not been good leaders!
The St. Louis County police department has a long history of abusing the Permit-to-Acquire system for handguns and you ignore it. It is violating that system even now. It has had a 14-year history of misleading citizens about LTC and you allowed it without a whimper. Shortly, St. Louis County will have to begin issuing LTC, as the state legislature will step in and force you to do so. The police department will surely continue it’s heavy-handed approach to honest citizens and firearms ownership. Your expected inaction and lack of control will earn you the community’s continued disrespect.
During the last year, the Second Amendment Coalition of Missouri has graduated hundreds from our safety training class for getting LTC. In every case, we recommended that the student apply for an out-of-state permit. After St. Louis County starts providing LTC permits, we will continue to recommend that the student NOT spend his money with an organization like St. Louis County. It is our considered belief that you are not worthy of support from either them or us unless and until this abusive activity and anti self-defense bias is removed.
Yours very truly,
Dale
