AMENDMENT COALITION OF MISSOURI
February 16, 2006
Dear
SACMO Supporter:
I
have just returned from the capital in Jefferson City. Today, SACMO
conducted a breakfast/brunch presentation to the members of the General
Assembly and all the staff, the title of which was, "Repeal of the Permit
To Acquire (PTA) handgun system.
A
Continental Breakfast consisting of 35 dozen of the finest doughnuts and
bagels, plus orange juice, coffee, bottled water, cream cheese, sugar, creamer and
all the napkins, spoons, plastic knives, ice, table cloths and so on. It
was served starting at 8:45 A.M. with the first actual presentation at
9:00 lasting for 15 minutes, being repeated every half hour. That was
the original plan.
We
had 20 inch by 30 inch foam boards standing on tables at the head of the class
that we had set up. On them in very Big, bold print were the many pieces
of evidence showing why the PTA had no effect upon crime, how
criminals could not be prosecuted for not registering their gun, but citizens could
be, and the actual results of the exclusive SACMO survey of all 115
jurisdictions in Missouri. It clearly showed that all the sheriffs are doing
it differently, that 98 % are either wrong or illegal or both and are demanding
answers to questions that they are not allowed to ask. It was a very
convincing presentation that the PTA is wrong, is being abused, is out of
control, has developed into an abomination of the law and must be repealed.
It was a very convincing show.
As
it turned out, instead of having a groups of legislator in the
"class" at one time, we would have one come and visit, then another
and so on. It started with myself slowly walking by the displays
explaining each one to Rep. Brian Munzlinger. As I looked over his
shoulder, I saw another one of the SACMO guys doing the same thing with
another state rep. Then another one of the guys led another senator or
representative through the displays and so on and so on, individually, one at
a time. We wound up with perhaps 33 to 35 legislators taking the tour,
many of the staff and several reporters. Plus we had one entire class of
37, 11th graders with their teachers sit in the classroom while we conducted
the complete presentation. I noticed three "suits" looking on
during the presentation. I don't know who they were but I didn't include
them in the number of legislators
Many
of the state legislators and their staff saw first hand that the PTA system,
led by the sheriffs, was really a big problem that must be addressed.
The flaws of the system has been revealed in a big way.
Besides
the walking tour of the displayed evidence, we had made printed handouts with
the complete display tour on regular paper as a handout. Everyone that
took the tour also was given a complete copy of all the evidence. Then,
after the event was over, we took a copy of the handout to every single senate
and house office so that every one was sure to see the problem with PTA.
The remarks from many of the secretaries indicated that everyone seemed to
know what the event was about and that SACMO was there today.
Ladies
and gentlemen, I can't tell you have proud I am of SACMO's performance today.
This was original thinking, a new way of getting a message across. This
a type of project that no one in the gun rights movement in Missouri
has ever done before. This was a new, novel way of getting their
attention and it worked. We "raised the bar" of awareness
about PTA in Jefferson City. A jump start, so to speak.
Eight
of the SACMO management team worked to pull this off. I thank and credit
them all with our success today. Speaking for myself, after getting up
at 3:45 A.M. even though I am elated, I am bushed. I hope that I am
getting the message correct. There is no proof reader helping me tonight
but I wanted you to know right away what we accomplished. Please forgive
any "goofs" in my message.
It
was hard work, a long exhausting day but how many people can go to bed
tonight, feeling good and say, "I belong to an organization that
made a difference today in gun rights and freedom?" Thank you all
for your support of SACMO. Without it, we could not have pulled this off
today and the truth about Missouri's PTA system would still be a dirty little secret.
